French Montana Confronts Immigration Misinformation

Updated: Jun 25, 2023

French Montana, birth name Karim Kharbouch, was born and raised in Morocco until the age of 13 years old when he immigrated with his family to the United States of America.

Well known for his musical contributions in Hip-Hop, such as “Shot Caller”, “Unforgettable”, “Wiggle It”, and “All The Way Up”, French has taken a different path gaining him recognition and praise from a different audience. This new audience is made up of people not as interested in Hip-Hop, but more interested in better employment opportunities, housing, and education. This audience comes from the struggles of immigration; a long standing issue in America and a common topic of discussion during presidential elections.

As reported by TMZ on June 15th, 2023, French Montana has taken up the cause of immigration information. “Thursday saw the premiere of French's partnership and promo for "Informed Immigrant" an organization that provides information, education, and support to undocumented families living in the United States.”

French Montana shared his immigration story in a YouTube video promoting “Informed Immigrant”. French also stated in the video, that at 17 years of age he learned that he was undocumented and faced the hurdles that many undocumented families face in the United States regarding education and scholarship eligibility.

According to TMZ, it wasn’t until 2018, a year after French Montana’s success with hit song “Unforgettable”, that French got his U.S. citizenship.

On June 16th, 2023 French will be presenting "For Khadija", his documentary detailing the story of his immigration from Morocco to America, as part of the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival.
